WHITE GROUP
[4] Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) vs. [6] Victoria Azarenka (BLR)
Azarenka leads 2-1

Yesterday Azarenka made her season finale debut, and what a fine job she made of it too. That the 20-year-old was quick out of the blocks and kept Jelena Jankovic off balance was nothing new; the impressive thing was the way she held her game - and her mind - together when Jankovic threatened to get back into the match. That experience should stand the Belarusian in good stead today, as 19-year-old Wozniacki takes her turn to make her first championships appearance. While the Dane was generally more consistent and rose higher in the rankings, Azarenka had a surprisingly easy run against her friend in the two matches they played this year, losing just four games in each. That, coupled with Wozniacki's heavier workload in recent months and signs her body needs a break, could well weigh in Azarenka's favor once again.

[1] Dinara Safina (RUS) vs. [8] Jelena Jankovic (SRB)
Tied at 3-3

After her loss to Azarenka yesterday, Jankovic said she hadn't been in the mood, a strange assessment from a player who fought so hard to make the cut for Doha. In any case, a tally of 33 unforced errors was disastrous for a player who built her reputation around a tidy counterpunching game, and Jankovic can only hope she gets her groove back today. The fact that beating Safina for the title at Cincinnati was the high point of her year should give the 25-year-old confidence, especially as Safina is under all sorts of pressure - to win her first-ever match at the season-ending championships, and of course to hold on to the No.1 ranking by bettering whatever Serena Williams achieves this week. But has the Russian put her Beijing loss to world No.226 Zhang Shuai behind her? Whoever wins today will enjoy a much-needed confidence boost.

MAROON GROUP
[2] Serena Williams (USA) vs. [7] Venus Williams (USA)
S.Williams leads 11-10

It's shaping up as a tough couple of days at the office for defending champion Venus. On Tuesday night she seemed to on course for another routine win against Elena Dementieva - a player who hadn't beaten her in five years - before it all went horribly wrong; less than 24 hours later she must take to the court again against her sister. Serena won their last two meetings, at Miami and Wimbledon, and on yesterday's performances has to be considered the favorite today. For a start, she was able to avenge her French Open loss to Svetlana Kuznetsova in two tight sets, whereas Venus toiled for 2 hours 40 minutes - both are supremely fit athletes, but it has to make a difference. Venus's serve let her down against Dementieva, so if she wants to keep her hopes for back-to-back titles in Doha alive, that's the first thing to rectify.
