BUDAPEST, Hungary - The only seed in action on Day 1 of the GDF SUEZ Grand Prix, Alona Bondarenko, was tested but advanced to the second round. The sixth-seeded Ukranian, who is seeking her second Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles title, defeated Karolina Sprem for the first time in three career meetings, 46 75 61.
Romania's Edina Gallovits also got her first win in three clashes with Tsvetana Pironkova, 75 62, to reach the round of 16 for the first time here. She'll face Sybille Bammer if the No.3 seed wins her match on Tuesday.
Maria Elena Camerin, who has won two ITF Women's Circuit singles titles this year, recorded a victory here for the first time, taking down the event's 2006 runner-up, Lourdes Domínguez Lino, 46 60 61. The Italian also was 0-2 in the series with her opponent before Monday, though the previous encounters were nine years ago. A second round match-up with No.1 seed Patty Schnyder looms if the draw holds according to form.
Also Monday, Timea Bacsinszky, Petra Martic, Sharon Fichman and Margalita Chakhnashvili all won qualifying matches to secure main draw berths.
In addition to Bammer, last year's champ and No.2 seed Alizé Cornet, No.4 seed Agnes Szavay, No.5 seed Alisa Kleybanova, No.7 seed Sara Errani and No.8 seed Lucie Safarova will be in action Tuesday.
