Virginia Ruano Pascual ranks among the most successful doubles players in history, with 42 Sony Ericsson WTA Tour titles - including 10 Grand Slams - to her name. Eight of those majors came with Argentina's now-retired Paola Suárez. In one dominant stretch, the pair was named Tour Doubles Team of the Year three straight years (2002-'04). Anabel Medina Garrigues has also been successful with other partners, winning titles with Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario, Roberta Vinci and Dinara Safina.

After occasionally teaming up on Tour and in Fed Cup competition, the two Spaniards joined forces almost exclusively in 2007. Runner-up finishes came quickly - at Hobart, Amelia Island and 's-Hertogenbosch - before their first win as a combination at Stockholm in July. The team really hit its stride in 2008, taking the title at Hobart, Roland Garros - a first major for Medina Garrigues - and Portoroz.

Another highlight was a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics, where the pair lost in the final to Venus and Serena Williams. It was Ruano Pascual's second consecutive Olympic silver, after Athens with Conchita Martinez.

The duo defended its Roland Garros trophy in 2009, and en route to the title, took out No.1 seeds Cara Black and Liezel Huber in the semifinals, just like in 2008. Ruano Pascual's 65 weeks at No.1 in the world in doubles ranks 11th all-time. The one major she has yet to win is Wimbledon, though she's been a runner-up three times.
