One of doubles' major success stories over the past few years has been the emergence of Zheng Jie and Yan Zi. In 2006 the all-Chinese team became their nation's first Grand Slam champions when they won both the Australian Open and Wimbledon doubles titles.
The Cheng Du based duo has been playing together regularly for more than five years, but it was not until two seasons ago they were truly thrust into the spotlight. In addition to their Grand Slam heroics the standard-bearers for Chinese doubles were victorious in four other tournaments in 2006 and have carried this good form into the following season, winning in Charleston and Strasbourg as well as reaching the semifinals at both the Australian Open and Tokyo [indoors].
Unfortunately, a left ankle injury to Zheng midway through 2007 temporarily placed this success on hold, but judging by their performances since the turn of the year they are intent on carrying on from where they left off - winning one tournament, Sydney, and reaching the final of two more since the turn of the year.
These triumphs mean their burgeoning trophy cabinet is now home to 11 Sony Ericsson WTA Tour trophies and when Zheng returns from the left ankle injury which has put their partnership on hold since June, few would bet against them adding to this impressive collection of silverware.
