After a shaky start to life together, Katarina Srebotnik and Ai Sugiyama have been improving in leaps and bounds in the second half of 2007 and as they went about establishing themselves as one of the most feared partnerships on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. They entered last year's Roland Garros with just two wins to their name, but they proceeded to shock several of the game's more recognized teams with a sensational run, eventually losing out to fellow rookie pair Alicia Molik and Mara Santangelo in the final.

The Slovene-Japanese duo promptly followed this up with another impressive runner-up finish, this time at Wimbledon - losing out to the world's top team, Cara Black and Liezel Huber, in a thrilling three-set final. This rise up the rankings continued through the remainder of last season, with notable runners-up finishes at the Sony Ericsson Championships and Madrid as well as a magnificent title run at the prestigious Tier I event in Toronto.

Srebotnik and Sugiyama's triumph in Canada saw them not only overcome their conquerors at Stade Roland Garros, but also gain sweet revenge on their painful defeat at the All England Club with victory over Black and Huber in the final. With their first title and victories over several of the principal rivals already under their belt, they are rapidly making a name for themselves as one of the most exciting partnerships on Tour.
